De-icing and Road Safety: Extremely effective at melting ice and snow at lower temperatures than rock salt, it is widely used for road, walkway, and parking lot de-icing.
Dust Control: Due to its hygroscopic nature (absorbing moisture from the air), it is applied to gravel roads, construction sites, and mining areas to suppress dust and keep surfaces damp.
Desiccant/Moisture Control: Used in industrial, commercial, and household dehumidifiers to absorb moisture and prevent mold or corrosion.
Food Industry (E509): Functions as a firming agent for canned vegetables (tomatoes, pickles), tofu production, a calcium source in brewing beer, and for creating gelatinous spheres in molecular gastronomy.
Industrial Applications: Used in oil well brines, wastewater treatment, as an accelerator in concrete (sets faster), a paint additive, and a rubber coagulant.
Medical/Healthcare: Used intravenously to treat hypocalcemia (low blood calcium), manage magnesium toxicity, and in cardiac resuscitation.
Aquariums: Used to introduce bioavailable calcium for corals and shellfish in reef tanks.
